What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is a type of coronavirus that has previously not been identified. The name is derived from “CO” from the word corona, “VI” from the word virus, and “D” for the word disease. This unique virus is also commonly known simply as coronavirus.

COVID-19 is an illness that spreads from one person to the next by means of respiratory droplets. These minuscule droplets are released when a person coughs, sneezes, or even speaks or laughs. It is also possible to catch COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that an infected person has touched.

Much is still unknown about COVID-19, but teams of skilled researchers around the world are working to understand how the disease works and how to protect against infection and treat those who are infected.

Why is COVID-19 testing so important?

COVID-19 testing is important from both personal and public health standpoints. Many people who are infected with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, and some show no symptoms at all. Researchers believe this disease is highly contagious, and even those who are completely asymptomatic can still spread COVID-19 to others.

It is also clear that individuals with existing health issues, as well as those who are in their retirement years and beyond, have a higher risk of serious negative effects when infected. Testing allows individuals to know their status and take steps to prevent spreading the disease from others, such as a voluntary quarantine.

On a personal level, knowing your status allows you to closely monitor your health and take action if serious symptoms arise. In addition, testing is required for some professions and for travel to certain areas.

How is COVID-19 testing performed?

Integrative Urgent Care offers polymerase chain reaction (PCR) nasal swab testing for COVID-19. This test is highly sensitive and reliable, and it produces accurate results.

When you come in for a PCR nasal swab test, your practitioner will use a sterile swab to gather a sample of fluid from your nasal cavities. Although the process can be a bit uncomfortable, there is no significant discomfort, and the swabbing takes less than a moment to complete.

You’ll receive your results in two to three business days. If you need written documentation of your COVID-19 test results, just let your practitioner know during your appointment. Booking a visit takes just moments and can be done online or over the phone, so don’t delay.
